Peninsula Sports Officials Association
1.What are the prerequisites? Have a positive attitude, polite, fair, consistent, prompt, responsible, ability to take charge and be heard, good customer service skills, have hustle and willingness to learn.
2. What is the pay scale? $28 to $37 per game, depending on the type of softball game and level of experience, paid approximately every 3 weeks.
3.What will I need to provide? $150 registration fee (includes USA Softball dues & insurance) and Umpire uniform ($125 average cost). These costs can be deducted from your pay over time if needed.
4.What is the schedule? Let us know when you are available to work and how far you are willing to travel, and we provide you with a monthly list of assignments. The season runs typically from March - October on the weekdays starting at 6:30 p.m. Assignments range from 1 to 4 games per night. Locations are generally from Menlo Park to Brisbane.
5.How do I get started?Registration instructions can be found in the Forms section on the Documents/Links tab above. Complete the Personnel Services form and Slow Pitch Availability form and return to PSOA as per the instructions.
6.Other Requirements? All PSOA umpires attend an annual General Meeting in January/ early February and participate in the Association's annual fundraiser Umpire's Softball Tournament in the Spring. Umpires also demonstrate knowledge of the rules by taking the annual USA Softball Umpire Exam (open book test). Finally, PSOA requires all Umpires to attend at least two clinics annually to review softball rules and umpire mechanics.
7. What is the uniform? USA Softball polo shirt and baseball cap, heather grey or navy slacks, black shoes & belt, ball bag, plate brush & balls/strikes indicator.
8.Is there training available? In addition to the annual clinics mentioned above, PSOA provides individualized training, evaluation and mentoring to all new and continuing Umpires.
